Awareness Through Movement®

Awareness Through Movement. For groups and individuals. Online or in-person.

Mostly lying down on a mat, on your back, side, front…sometimes sitting, kneeling or standing.

At the beginning, you take stock of how you feel. You lie down, let go and tune into your senses.

The teacher talks, guides. You follow along to try out slow, easy, playful moves. You foreground your awareness, letting go of effort, dwelling in ease. It feels like mindfulness in motion. Explore movement patterns that unfold and build over time.

Let go of (self) judgement. Be a movement investigator. Be a solver of physical riddles. Take your time. Immerse yourself in the moment, mindfully. Sense, feel what you do. Sense what else you could do too.

New neural pathways are formed between your sensory and motor systems. You have more options.

Be surprised as you improve, as your habits untangle. Dissolve tension, strain and effort. Breathe smoothly, fully. Recover pleasure in moving. Grow your movement vocabulary. Refine co-ordination and skill. Connect with your inner resources. Feel refreshed.

Take what you have learnt into your day to day. Small moves. Big gains. Movement lessons. Life lessons.

FUNCTIONAL INTEGRATION®

Personalised one-to-ones. For individuals. Online or in-person.

Mostly lying down on a mat, rug or padded table. Sometimes, perhaps, kneeling, sitting, standing or walking.

Sessions include a personalised blend of movement observation, movement coaching, Awareness Through Movement (ATM) exploration, embodied anatomy and self-care tips.

If we work together in-person, we include hands-on guidance, tailored to each learner - known as Functional Integration® (FI). The teacher joins with your easy movements through touch. You are guided to sense and explore new movement possibilities.

We grow the movement patterns to incorporate co-ordinated movements of your whole skeletal structure. Nothing is forced. Your system learns how to reduce strain as you spread the work of movement more appropriately throughout your body.

We co-create each session to help you find new solutions to issues such as: pain, stiffness or tension; stress, anxiety and recovery from trauma; range of motion; balance; finding more comfort in everyday activities or optimising performance for sport, music or acting. Or we may work on improving your functioning for the daily or leisure activities that interest you.

As your whole becomes better integrated and the parts better co-ordinated with each other you will also feel more relaxed, looser and softer.

Moving on to maturity…

If you have been having one-to-ones, I would love for you to move on (when you are ready) to group sessions.

If you have been coming to group sessions, you may now know enough to carry on with your own self-directed Feldenkrais practice - doing Awareness Through Movement (ATM) sessions at home, improvising around them and bringing mini ATM-like moments into your every day activities.

One of the goals of Feldenkrais is to move towards what the Dr Feldenkrais called maturity. He meant being free of conditioned behaviour that acts against your own interest.

As you move from private sessions…to a group…and to your own practice, you have increasing chance to exercise your autonomy or maturity and to design your own adaptations to each ATM lesson. From there, it is a small step to being more empowered to take these changes of approach into your day to day life. I believe this practice of deepening your mind-body movement intelligence can be a rewarding one that lasts a lifetime.

"I am going to be your last teacher. Not because I'll be the greatest teacher you may ever encounter, but because from me you will learn how to learn. When you learn how to learn, you will realize that there are no teachers, that there are only people learning…"  - Dr Moshe Feldenkrais
