Playful Movement Workshops / 5 & 7 March / for York International Women's Week

from £3.00

Playful 90-minute movement workshops

  • Thu 5 Mar (11:00 AM - 12:30 PM) // Theatre@41, YO31 7PB

  • Sat 7 Mar (2:00 - 3:30 PM) // Rawcliffe Rec, YO30 5TS

Treat yourself to better balance, foot freedom & a more confident story about your mobility

Welcome to your new movement story

Join one of our light-hearted workshops to connect with yourself, try out simple barefoot movements, play balance games & become inspired about what might be possible for you.

Create a new story about your prospects for easier movement, no matter your age, stage or experience. Even if aches & stiffness hold you back, if your world feels like it is getting smaller, you’re included.

What we will do

With a tiny bit of talk and plenty of action, Julie will lead you in:

  • foot foundation warm-ups

  • simple barefoot moves to free your feet, train your toes & lubricate ankles

  • restoring balance through guided play, solo and partner games

  • feeling more grounded from the feet up

  • moving with more ease and confidence from a firmer foundation

All by sampling the tools and science backed techniques used by holistic physios & podiatrists The Foot Collective.

Can anyone do this?

Pretty much!

  • any age, ability and experience

  • if you can stand (with or without support of a wall or chair) you can join in fully

  • if you can sit in a chair, you will be able to join in with most of the session

I particularly enjoy working with people who lack confidence with movement or are returning to it after injury, illness or just a long break for the many reasons that life throws our way. We all start wherever we are and can work at different levels to suit each of us.

  • I guide you to tune into body awareness to help you stay within your personal Goldilocks Zone - doing a level of movement that is not too easy (boring), nor too challenging (frustrating or painful)

  • I will give you take-home ideas to practise later as movement snacks, with no props needed as household items work just as well

If you are especially unsure, face a lot of challenges or feel very limited right now, you could try a one-to-one first.

What should I wear?

  • everyday clothes are fine, as long as you can move freely and feel comfortable

  • sports kit is also fine if you prefer

  • please come ready to take your shoes off, as we will move in socks or preferably bare feet - clean tootsies & any cuts covered with a plaster please

Who is this good for

This is for you if you want to…

  • improve movements for daily living - walking, stairs, hiking, squatting & housework

  • have a laugh trying out some new skills & practising them if you want to get better

  • use a foot-focused training approach for more skill and less strain in your regular leisure activities

  • spend time with your balance - as a mindfulness practice, for confidence and feeling grounded

  • prevent injury, build joint resilience and support any rehab

  • be anti-fragile, safeguard your future independence - avoid falls, fractures & fear

  • start a new foot-first and whole-body movement practice for life

  • satisfy your curiosity about transitioning towards more natural / barefoot shoes…or you have already made the switch

Thursday 5 March // 11:00 AM - 12:30 PM

Dance Studio, Theatre@41, 41 Monkgate, York, YO31 7PB

LOCATION SHOWN IN THE MAP ABOVE

We will be in the ground floor Dance Studio at Theatre@41. A lovely spacious room for movement practice with mirrors to check your form (if you would like to!)

The theatre is on Monkgate, on the left hand side as you are heading out of York, just before you reach the roundabout. The theatre is set back from the pavement next to The Ark (Elim) Church. The theatre’s door is on the left side of the building.

ON FOOT OR BY BIKE

It takes around 3 minutes from Monk Bar on foot, a bit less by bike.

BY BUS

Buses 12, 13, 14 and 81 pass nearby - according to itravelyork.info. Please check with operators for up to date timetables.

BY CAR

Blue badge holders

Blue badge parking is sometimes available in the resident parking bays directly in front of the theatre.

Pricey but near

Monk Bar car park, St John’s Street is a 3 minute walk away. It is quite pricey, with only a small reduction if you have a Minster Badge as a York resident. From the far end walk down the path alongside the health centre to come out onto Monkgate just a few metres away from the theatre.

Cheaper, also near but may not be available

The theatre tells us that a cheaper option is to park at the Black Horse pub on Monkgate for £5, paying inside the pub - spaces permitting. I haven’t tested this option out myself yet.

Even cheaper, 15 min walk, should have spaces available

A little further away (15 min walk) is the Morrison’s car park, Foss Island’s Road at £4.80 for 2.5 hours - information from parkopedia.co.uk and I haven’t tested this one out myself.

Cheapest but includes bus ride (Park & Ride)

If travelling from outside York, the council recommends York Park & Ride as a cheaper option than paying for parking in the city centre. £3.90 for the return bus plus parking your car. Times & details here https://www.itravelyork.info/park-ride
